Srinagar, Aug 22: Terming the recent anonymous letters addressed to Sikh community as handiwork of some mischievous elements, All India Shiromani Akali Dal president, Jaswant Singh Mann on Sunday said Sikhs were always safe in Kashmir and they don’t face any threat.
Talking to Greater Kashmir, Singh said people of his community had been living in Kashmir for ages. “They have always felt safe in Kashmir and have admired the communal harmony shown by the people of majority community,” he said.
Referring to the letters, he said sometimes mischievous elements in the society take undue advantages to create confusion in the society.
However, he said they could assert that Sikhs were safe in Valley. He said he would convey this message to other states as well. “We will put our best to remove the confusion,” he said.
About the killings by the police and CRPF, he said government had to change its tactics to handle the protests.
Meanwhile, a day after Sikhs asserted that they were safe in Kashmir, the community has demanded a probe into the threatening letters incident. “We condemn the threats. However, we are happy with the reaction of both the government and separatists groups including Hurriyats,” Sikh United Front, President Sudhershan Singh Wazir said.
Meanwhile, in a statement issued today Punjab Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal sought Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh’s intervention in the matter. “The threat to Sikhs was a serious issue and PM should intervene in the matter immediately,” he said.

Our wounds, your theories

We are living in sad times. I don’t know if I can call it ‘living’. Everyday mothers and sisters in Kashmir wash the blood of children of stone from the rough roads of the valley. Every day we see someone killed, and every day we see someone succumbing to injuries. Here a child has bullet in his neck, there a teenage girl has bullet in her back. They say she was engaged only 20 days ago. Here in Kashmir even an eight year-old-kid was flogged to death. We were told a 22-year-old girl died after a bullet fired in air hit her chest, and she died in Batamaloo. Someone has rightly said that Kashmiris have become so tall that when forces fire in air, the bullets hit either their heart or head.
An eight-year-old kid was beaten to death. His body had bruises all over. His father was washing his little body with water. But even this failed to wake the conscience of parliament and intellectuals in New Delhi. Not a single statement on the daily loss of lives in Kashmir. Nothing. Instead the Home Minister had this message for the people of Kashmir: “Keep your children at home.” He should have added that a predator is out in Kashmir, and that he has a special liking for children. This way his warning would have been understandable.
In a democratic country, in 2010, the Home Minister is asking people not to allow their children to step outside their homes. This is the State of the democratic State – that on the roads your children have no safety. That protest is no longer legitimate. That if you step on the roads we are not sure whether you will be hit by a bullet in the head or chest, even though we always tell our forces to fire in the air, and that too in self-defense.
At times I want to laugh at the intellectual class sitting in the flashy studios of news channels in New Delhi, and passing judgments through the chatter boxes on every issue on earth. Their arrogance and confident-ignorance is worth watching. For them human Rights is a great concept but only when victims fall under the constitution of India. Sawpan Das Gupta repeatedly argues whether those people who doesn’t accept the constitution of India should be allowed to enjoy the same rights which the constitution of India guarantees. In British or in USA, the very talk would have shocked the people. But in India nothing happens. Not a leaf moves. It is an argument, and it is perceived as an argument.
I want to laugh out loud at these intellectual-journalists when they condemn Taliban and talk about the Talibinisation of Kashmir and Islamisation of Sopore. For heavens sake, give us one example in past two months where Jihadi protesters in Kashmir beat someone to death, just one example? And respond to the allegations of the family which accuses the forces of beating their child to death in Batmaloo. Is that not Talibinsation?
Imagine a child being beaten in classroom by his teacher in Delhi or in Mumbai. Beaten, I say. Recently there was debate on corporal punishment for days together in Delhi based media. But when it comes to beating of children to death, they are silent, and the State says don’t allow your children to step out.
Every time I see the picture of the father who is being kicked by the CRPF man when he tries to protect the body of his son from sacrilege in Tengpora Bypass, I want to cry my heart out. This should not happen to any father anywhere in the world. That very photograph tells me everything about what I am, about my life, and what the life of my child and the children has been reduced to in Kashmir. The photo speaks more than 100,000 words about Kashmir and the conflict in Kashmir. Here we are not even allowed to protect the sanctity of the bodies of our children.
And then they talk about Islamisation of Sopore and Talibinisation of Kashmir. Whatever you name the current protests, whatever you want to name the current rage sweeping the streets, whatever you call them, the pictures of the dead, of our children, of our fathers, our wailing mothers and sisters would haunt our young generation for a long time to come. They will never forget it.
The wounds inflicted on the people of Kashmir won’t heal by what a columnist has written “butt numbing speech of the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.” These are wounds which can’t be healed by speeches anymore. Act now and resolve Kashmir for good. Respect the aspirations of people of Kashmir. Now it is the question of justice and test of your democracy and liberalism. Act now lest these wounds become so intolerable that the young here will seek answer in something else to heal them, something other than peaceful protests. The day that happens it would be another sad chapter in our history, and saddest in your history.

I left India for freedom, and out of fear

At this age, it is depressing to think that young kids in Kashmir are dying. Yet, I think violence is not the answer. India is a democracy that allows everyone the right to express his or her views. But how does one express one’s anger and anguish?
I have always believed that views can be put across through dialogue and debate and not through violence. But what do you do when your voice has been taken away and you have been pushed to a corner with the bayonet poking at your neck?
Why would little children pick up stones instead of pencils, pens and brushes, India has to ask itself. When they ask for freedom, it brings back memories of why I left. Just for one reason... Freedom and fear. At my age I cannot take too many risks. At their age, they too can't. But they have been forced to.
I see this as just a passing phase. But it is no less serious. One has to remember, however, that India is a big family and when a child in the family makes a mistake one doesn't throw him or her out. You try to make him understand. Somehow this family has failed to do that. It happened to me and now over 60 years it is happening with Kashmir.
India has become the land of puzzling paradoxes. On the one hand is an artist's freedom of expression, a right that our society is founded upon and one that we appreciate on a deeply personal level. On the other is the cherished value that allows all Indians to live harmoniously in a multicultural society with sensitivity and respect towards the religious sensibilities of other cultures.
People say that I am living in exile just as they say that Kashmiris want to separate.

STANDING OUT
A story of an unsung hero trying to make Kashmir an innovative and entrepreneurial society.

In the perspective of economic condense; can the entrepreneurial opportunities particularly at grassroots level, really blossom in Kashmir Valley? Before throwing any answers we better recognize the gathering ability of our unsung innovators.
Here is the story of a village boy who thinks Kashmir is full of creative potential, but he strongly feels that there is a need to recognize, respect and reward the creative minds struggling due to the lack of financial resources and technical guidance.
S. Fayaz Ahmad from Halmatpora Kupwara, some 100 kms from Srinagar city, is trying hard to infuse the creative spirit in youth and also get exposure so that their innovations are commercialized, even getting patented. Not only this after scouting the talent he is trying to project their creative work in various media organizations so that investors can be attracted.
S. Fayaz Ahmad who has done his MBA in Human Resource from Pondicheery University is now busy with the GIAN Cell, University of Kashmir, where he along with his other members have volunteered to make Kashmir an innovative society.
“We are a team at NIF and GIAN which is busy in scouting innovators. We are trying hard to recognize, respect and reward our innovators here in Kashmir Valley. Till date we have scouted some 80 innovators across Jammu and Kashmir and some of them were honored and even one was awarded by the President of India” reveals S. Fayaz, adding that they have recommended one innovator for TR35 Technology award which will be conferred by Technology Review an MIT magazine on Innovation, Published by Cyber Media in India
S Fayaz acknowledges the pivotal role of Prof. G M Bhat who is Director USIC, University of Kashmir and all the collaborators of NIF and GIAN who are working very hard in scouting these innovators. He upholds that Prof. G M Bhat has done remarkably well in spotting grassroots innovators in Kashmir and his relentless efforts have yielded desired results.
“I am really grateful to Prof. G M Bhat, who is Director USIC, University of Kashmir and all the collaborators of NIF and GIAN who are working very hard in scouting these innovators”, Fayaz sounds grateful. Acknowledging the strenuous efforts of S Fayaz Ahmad in highlighting the green grassroots innovators from Jammu and Kashmir he was honored at the fifth National Award Function at the IARI, Pusa New Delhi by President of India on 18th of November 2009. S. Fayaz even discussed the scope of Kashmiri innovators with the former President of India Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam on 29th of Nov. 2009 at IIM (Ahmedabad)
With commitment reflecting from his face S. Fayaz Ahmad believes that our education system needs change with more thrust on practical education. “What kind of pedagogy at school as well as higher education level will promote entrepreneurial and innovative approach among young people is the question that remains to be properly answered. Just as one cannot learn cycling by practicing it on blackboard or computer screen, one cannot learn entrepreneurship and may not become a great innovator without trying things out” says S. Fayaz Ahmad
S. Fayaz Ahmad and his team headed by Prof. G M Bhat, who is Chairman GIAN Cell, constantly visit across Jammu and Kashmir and have organized workshops even in Leh, and Tetwal. The team has also organized yatra in Banihal, and seminars in University of Kashmir, Kupwara Degree College and other colleges of the valley.
These days S Fayaz Ahmad is working on a book “Unsung Scientific Heroes of Kashmir” and a novel titled “An Angel lost in Humans"

سرینگر//شاہی درخت چنار کوتحفظ فراہم کر نے کےلئے ایک اہم قدم کے طور پر کشمیر یونیورسٹی نے تاریخی نسیم باغ کو ”چنار ہری ٹیج پارک “میں تبدیل کر نے کا فیصلہ کیا ہے اور اس پارک کو خوبصور ت و جاذب نظر بنانے کے لئے نسیم باغ میں قائم کئی تدریسی شعبوں کو منتقل کر دیا گیا ہے اور اب وہاں موجود دیگر ڈھانچوں کو ہٹانے کا کام شروع ہوگا۔بدھ کو اس بات کا اعلان کرتے ہوئے کشمیر یونیورسٹی کے وائس چانسلر پروفیسر ریاض پنجابی نے کہاکہ کشمیر یونیورسٹی دنیا کی خوبصورت ترین یونیورسٹیوں میں سے ایک ہے اور اس کی خوبصورتی کو فروغ دینے کے لئے ہم سب کو اپنا رول ادا کر نا ہوگا ۔ پروفیسر پنجابی نے کہا”کئی مجبوریوں کی وجہ سے ہمیں چند تعمیراتی ڈھانچے کھڑا کر نا پڑے اور اب مزید تعمیراتی کام نہیں ہوگا ،خاص کر نسیم باغ میں تمام تعمیراتی کام بند کردیئے گئے ہیں اور اسے ایک ثقافتی ورثہ کے طور پر محفوظ کیا جائےگا“ انہوں نے کہا” نسیم باغ میں مجبوری کے سبب گیسٹ ہاوس تعمیر کرنا پڑا جو حالانکہ نہیں ہونا چاہئے تھا مگر اب حکومت نے ہمیں زکورہ میں 300کنال ارضی فراہم کی ہے ،لہٰذامزید تعمیری کام اب وہاں پر ہی ہونگے“۔ان کا کہنا تھا کہ انہوں نے وسطی ایشیاء،یورپ ،امریکہ اور ایران کا دوہ کیا ہے اور وہاں بھی چنار کے درخت پائے جاتے ہیں لیکن کشمیر میں موجود چنار کے درختوں کو ایک خاص مقام حاصل ہے“۔ 500کنال اراضی پر پھیلے نسیم باغ میں 718چنار ہیں اور یہ باغ مغل بادشاہ اکبر کے زمانے کا ہے۔یہ باغ کافی عرصہ سے نظر انداز رہا ہے اور اب کشمیر یونیورسٹی نے اس کو ثقافتی ورثہ کے طور پر محفوظ کر نے کےلئے وہاں موجود عمارات کو منہدم کرنے کا فیصلہ کیا ہے جبکہ چناردرختوں کو تحفظ فراہم کر نے کےلئے سائنسی بنیادوں پر اقدامات کئے جائیں گے۔ڈاکٹر پنجابی نے مزید کہا ” وائس چانسلر کا عہدہ سنبھالنے کے بعد میں نے نسیم باغ کی اس تباہی کو محسوس کیا اور نسیم باغ جو یونیورسٹی میں میری پسندیدہ جگہ ہے ،کو میں نے پارک میں تبدیل کر نے کا فیصلہ کیااورآج یہ خواب شرمندہ تعبیر ہورہا ہے“ ۔پروفیسر پنجابی نے کہا ”مولانا ابوالکلام آزاد جیسے عبقری بھی چنار باغ میں ٹھہرے ہیں جس کا ذکر انکے مشہور و معروف انشائیہ نما خطوط کے مجموعے ’غبارخاطر‘میں موجود ہےں۔انہوں نے کہا کہ یونیورسٹی نے پہلے ہی چنار ڈیولپمنٹ فنڈ قائم کیا ہے اور اس سلسلے میں صاحب ثروت ،صنعت کاروں اور دیگر لوگوں سے عطیات وصول کئے جائےں گے تاکہ اس باغ کو جاذب نظر ثقافتی پارک بنایا جاسکے۔ انہوں نے مزید بتاےا کہ مرزا باغ نگےن کو بھی بحال کرنےکی کوششیں کی جائیں گی اور وہاں سے تجاوزات ہٹا کر اس باغ کو کھیل کود کی سرگرمیوں کیلئے استعمال میں لایا جائے گا ۔انہوں نے کہا کہ چنار ڈیولپمنٹ پارک جدید طرز کی پارک ہوگی جہاں بارش اور برف کے نتیجے میں جمع ہونےوالے پانی کی نکاس کےلئے ڈرینج سسٹم بنایا جائے گااورپارک کی طرف جانے والے تمام راستوں کےلئے روشنی کے انتظام کے علاوہ کار پارکنگ کے لئے بھی جگہ مخصوص رکھی جائےگی۔پریس کانفرنس میں پروفیسر پنجابی کے ہمراہ ڈائریکٹر فلوریکلچر سرور نقاش ،رجسٹرار کشمیر یونیورسٹی سید فےاض ،شعبہ باٹونی کے سربراہ پروفےسر غلام حسن ڈار ،لینڈ سکیپ آفےسر پروفےسر بی اے رفاعی اوریونیورسٹی کے کئی سینئر افسران بھی تھے۔اس سے قبل ڈائریکٹر فلوری کلچر غلام سرور نقاش نے کہا کہ چنار کے انمول ورثے کو سائنسی بنیادوں پر اٹھائے جانے والے اقدامات سے تحفظ فراہم کیا جا سکتا ہے نسیم باغ میں موجود چنار کے درختوں کی شاخ تراشی کی ضرورت پر زور دیتے ہوئے انہوں نے کہا کہ چنار کے بھاری بھرکم درختوں کی شاخیں ایک دوسرے سے ملتی ہیں جسکے نتےجے میں مختلف بےمارےاں منتقل ہو تی ہیں جو چناروں کے مستقبل کےلئے خطرات کا باعث ہےں ۔ڈائریکٹر فلوریکلچر نے بتاےا کہ اب جبکہ نسیم باغ کو چنار ہیرٹےج پارک میں تبدیل کرنے کا فےصلہ کیا گےا ہے ،چنار کے درختوں کی حفاظت کیلئے سائنسی اقدامات اٹھائے جائیں گے ۔انہوں نے کہا کہ محکمہ نے اس سے پہلے بھی چنار کے درختوں کی شاخ تراشی کے اقدامات کئے تھے لیکن اس پر انگلیاں اٹھائی گئیں اور کئی لوگوں نے شور مچاےا ۔ان کا کہنا تھا کہ اس مقصد کیلئے یونیورسٹی کے شعبہ باٹونی کے ماہرین کی خدمات حاصل کی جائیںگی ۔ان کا مزید کہنا تھا کہ یہ عمل تاریخی باغات کی حفاظت سے متعلق عالمی کمیٹی کی طرف سے1981میں تشکیل دیئے گئے چارٹر کے مطابق عملایا جائے گااور اس سلسلے میں آئین کی دفعہ11کو مد نظر رکھا جائے گا۔چارٹر کے مطابق اگر بوسیدہ ہونے کی وجہ سے چنار کا کوئی درخت کاٹا جاتا ہے تو اس جگہ نیا درخت لگانا ضروری ہے ۔یونیورسٹی کی طرف سے فراہم کر دہ اعداد و شمار کے مطابق 500کنال راضی پر پھیلے نسیم باغ میں چنار کے کل 718درخت ہیں جن میں سے 22سوکھ گئے ہیں ایسے چنا ر کی تعداد 150ہے جن کی شاخ تراشی کی ضرورت ہے جبکہ 546ایسے درخت ہیں جن کی شاخیں بیماریوں کا شکا ر ہیں

Networking sites debate attack on photojournalist

Srinagar, Jan 8: The attack on Greater Kashmir lensman, Amaan Farooq, by DySP of Police after the Lal Chowk gunbattle has led to public criticism of the act on social networking sites.
While the video clipping of the incident has been uploaded on you-tube, the users of social networking site face book from across the globe have widely condemned the act on the site.
Amaan was shot at by DSP, Safdar Samoon, when he was discharging his professional duties at the encounter site minutes after it had ended. While the police official opened fire on Amaan, several of his colleagues caught the scene in their still and video cameras. A video has been posted on you tube website and is available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XO_yIdyckQ.
People have posted several comments on the video, condemning the act and expressing sympathies with the photojournalist.
Several face book users have linked the you-tube video and stories about the incident to their face book accounts, which has evoked severe criticism.
“The assault on Greater Kashmir photojournalist, Amaan Farooq, is not attack on him but an attack on the entire journalistic fraternity who risk their lives while doing their professional duties,” this is the message from Kashmiri journalist, Zafar Mehdi, on face book.
A facebook user wrote on his page: “Even if the lensman had an altercation with the police officer, how is his firing on him justified. If this incident is taken lightly, there are chances that incidents like these may recur and become a norm.”
Another user said that the media men were being targeted for being pro-Kashmiri. “Attack on GK photojournalist is an example of this,” wrote Muhammad Shafi Bhat.
Carin Jodha Fischer wrote: “I have always said if I needed someone fearless to capture chilling moments, I would engage Amaan. Anybody else can do the artsy shots. Amaan covers chaos from the thicket of it without blinking an eyelid. Hope he gets better real soon.”
“Safdar Samoon has no right to be a police officer,” wrote many.
“Brutal and ruthless. Police has even put the likes of Gengiz Khan to shame,” comments Asif Saad on a video link on face book.

سرینگر//سال 2009نے کشمیر کی صحافت ،سیاست اور موسیقی میں تاریخ رقم کر نے والی کئی اہم شخصیات کو ہم سے چھین لیا۔دنیا کی نا پائیداری پر اظہار افسوس کو اپنی آواز سے مقبول عام بنانے والے گلوکار غلام حسن صوفی اور عبدا لرشید فراش کے انتقال نے وادی کو دو مثالی آوازوں سے محروم کر دیا۔60سال تک اپنی پیشہ ورانہ خدمات انجام دے کر بابائے صحافت اور مدیر آفتاب خواجہ ثناءاللہ بٹ بھی اس دنیا سے کوچ کر گئے ۔دونوں مدیران کی وفات سے جموں وکشمیر کی صحافتی تاریخ میںصحافت کا اہم باب بند ہوگیا۔خواجہ ثنا ءاللہ بٹ کی وفات کے ایک ہفتہ قبل نصف صدی تک کشمیر کی ار دو صحافت پر چھائے رہنے والے اور سرینگر ٹائمز کے مدیر اعلیٰ صوفی غلام محمد77سال کی عمر میں 15دسمبر کو اس دنیا سے چل بسے ۔صوفی غلام محمد ریاست کے سرکردہ صحافی کئی کتابوں کے مصنف بھی تھے۔صوفی غلام محمد کو صحافت کے میدان میں بہترین کارکردگی کے اعتراف میں کئی اعزازات سے نوازا گیا جبکہ 2003میں انہیں مفتی محمد سعید کے دور اقتدار میں قانون ساز کونسل کا ممبر نامزد کیا گیا تھا۔دونوں صحافیوں کے نماز جنازہ میں وزیر اعلیٰ عمر عبداللہ حریت کانفرنس کے دونوں دھڑوں کے سربراہان اور ریاست کی کئی سرکردہ سیاسی سماجی ادبی اور مذہبی رہنماﺅں نے شرکت کی۔6جنوری کو ریاست کے سابق وزیر اعلیٰ اور عوامی نیشنل کانفرنس سربراہ غلام محمد شاہ المعروف ’گل شاہ“انتقال کر گئے ۔ انکی عمر 88برس تھی وہ 7جولائی 1984سے 12مارچ 1986تک ریاست کے وزیر اعلیٰ رہے اس سے قبل وہ شیخ محمد عبداللہ کی وزارت کابینہ میں وزیر بھی رہے۔غلام محمد شاہ 1944 میں سیاست میں شامل ہوئے اور کشمیر چھوڑ دو تحریک ،رائے شماری کی تحریک اور موئے مقدس تحریک میں اہم رول ادا کیا ۔وہ محاز رائے شماری کے جنرل سیکریٹری بھی رہے اور نیشنل کانفرنس کے بانی شیخ محمد عبداللہ داماد اور معتمد خاص تھے۔ 1984میں انہوں نے نیشنل کانفرنس کے ایک درجن ممبران اسمبلی کے ساتھ پارٹی سے بغاوت کر کے عوامی نیشنل کانفرنس کی بنیاد ڈالی اور کانگریس کی حمایت سے وزیر اعلیٰ بنے۔29مارچ کو سابق ریاستی وزیر غلام نبی کوچک انتقال کر گئے۔کوچک شیخ محمد عبداللہ کے قریب ترین ساتھیوں میں سے تھے اور محاز رائے شماری تحریک کے دوران کئی بار مقید بھی رہے۔وہ شیخ محمد عبداللہ اور پھر غلام محمد شاہ کی وزارت میںسنیئر وزیر بھی رہے۔موت سے تین روز قبل انہوں نے نیشنل کانفرنس کو چھوڑ کر عوامی نیشنل کانفرنس میں شمولیت اختیار کی تھی۔ ریاست کی سرکردہ سیاسی شخصیت غلام محی الدین صوفی جنہوں نے کشمیر چھوڑ دو تحریک میں اہم کردار ادا کیا تھا 25فرور ی اپنی رہائش گاہ گاندربل میں انتقال کر گئے۔غلام محی الدین صوفی سرکردہ سیاست دان مولانا محمد سعید مسعودی پرنسل سیکریٹری تھے اورمولانا کی ہلاکت تک وہ ان کے ساتھ رہے۔غلام محی الدین صوفی کی عمر 81سال تھی۔ 9نومبر کو کشمیر کے محمد رفیع کہلانے والے معروف گلوکار غلام حسن صوفی بھی انتقال کر گئے ۔غلام حسن صوفی کے گاے ہوئے کئی گیت جن میں”افسوس دنیا کانسی نالوب سمسار ساتھی‘،چانہہ برتل روائم ہا رژاے آواز واژئی نو“زمانئی پوکنہ ہم دم توتئی کیا گو“جیسے کئی مشہور گیت اس وقت بھی زبان زدعام ہے۔ دنیا کی ناپائیداری کے بارے میں لکھے گئے گیتوں کو بے مثال اور جذباتی آواز عطا کر نے والے غلام حسن صوفی 9نومبر کو مالک حقیقی سے جا ملے اور ان کی موت پر وادی میں عوامی سطح پر بہت افسوس کیا گیااور اکثر لوگ انہیں ان کے ہی گائے ہوئے اس گیت ”افسوس دنیا کانسی نالوب سمسار ساتھی‘ کو گا کر انہیں یاد کرتے رہے اور آج بھی اگر ان کی یاد میں کوئی محفل منعقد ہوتی ہے تو وہاں ان کا یہ گیت ضرور گایا جاتا ہے۔2009نے جاتے جاتے ایک اور مشہور نوجوان گلو کار عبدا لرشید فراش کو ہم سے چھین لیا۔غلام حسن صوفی کی موت کے بعد فراش سے موسیقی اور گائیگی کی دنیا کو بہت امیدیں وابستہ تھیں ۔دنیا کی ناپائیداری اور موت کے موضوعات پر لکھے گئے گانوں کو انہوں نے اوت پر اثر آواز دی ۔ان کی موت کی خبر سنتے ہی لوگوں کے ذہن میں ان کا مشہور گانا”موت ژورو کرتھ خالی کم خانئی “آگیا۔عبد الرشید فراش نے کئی مشہور گیت گائے ہیں جن میں ”دلبرو مئے دلس کژھ گانگلئی بہہ بلئی چانے دیدار ساتھئی “اور ”آئی آدنیک مدانو پادن پے مئی دمابھہہ“شامل ہیں ۔
